Cantata: “In His Own Words” April 3rd!!

We call ourselves Easter people, because our faith teaches us that the resurrection is not a one-time thing. The Christian

calendar extends five Sundays past Easter until Pentecost. So it’s appropriate that on April 3rd, the Second Sunday of Easter,

the First Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir will present its Easter Cantata. Our choir, accompanied by a chamber

orchestra, will perform “In His Own Words” by Dan Goeller. The music is an aesthetic experience in which the message of

the Word is proclaimed through both singing and narration of Jesus’ words. The various texts are tied together thematically

by the use of Jesus’ “I am” phrases. Make plans to attend!!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH February - April 2016

from Charlie...

With the change to Daylight-Savings Time, spring is surely just around the corner. You know that they say: In

this glorious season, a young man’s (and woman’s) thoughts turn to … baseball? (Actually, what Lord Alfred

Tennyson said was: “In the spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.”)

Legendary Detroit Tigers radio broadcaster Ernie Harwell combined the themes of love and baseball when each

year, on the first broadcast from Spring Training, he quoted Song of Solomon 2:11-12, slightly altering the

passage: “Lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing

has come, and the voice of the umpire is heard in our land: ‘Play ball!’” (You heard me quote these verses a few

Sundays ago from the pulpit, donning a Kansas City Royals cap.)

The Royals open the new season on April 4. Harwell, a devout Christian, once observed, “Opening Day … is

what Easter is to the church. The faithful come out, but a lot of once-a-year attendees are there, too.” The

scripture verses also rhapsodize the feeling of love that spring brings. The gifts of spring rain are everywhere.

The sight of springing animals, the smell of figs and vines, the sound of birds singing, the feel of fresh flowers

and new buds are enough to arouse love in even the most cynical of persons. With springtime comes belief in

new adventures, new possibilities, and, most of all, a new “spring” outlook on life as Easter people who have

come through another winter of our lives.

So here’s to spring, here’s to love, here’s to the love of God in Jesus Christ, and here’s to baseball!

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH February - April 2016

FBI - Children’s Christian Education

The year of 2015 ended with a bang- our children did an incredible job in their Christmas performance of

'Just a Little Christmas'! Additionally, they raised $464 through their 2nd Annual Craft Fair- all funds will go

towards future service and mission projects. We could not have been more proud of all the hard work the

children put into the performance and all of their beautiful crafts! And, a huge thanks to all of you for your

purchases and support!

The year of 2016 has started out just as amazing as it ended! Our Faithful Bible Investigators have begun the

second half of this school years Christian Ed program, and are in for a full few months of learning more about

the Bible through our incredible 'Feasting on the Word' curriculum. In addition to the deep discussions, crafts,

and joy that come from our curriculum, we are adding in a new service piece into the FPC FBI Wednesday

program. Circles of the Heartland, CAPS of Salina, Salina Area United Way, and the Ashby House will be

visiting over the next few months to share with us more about their incredible organizations, and work with our

children to complete a service project to benefit their organization!

We certainly can't express to you how excited we are to share with you all of the fun adventures and lessons that

are to come for the Faithful Bible Investigators! Thank you for all of your support!

Blessings & Love,

Shelby

WIRED WORD

Is the realm of politics so different from the rest of life that the usual practices of decorum, decency,

sincerity and honesty shouldn’t apply? That was a question posed recently by the Wired Word curriculum.

It was provocative and worthy of discussion – by the three of us assembled that day for the class, which meets

at noon on Tuesdays. I understand that everyone is busy. Maybe you shy away from such difficult

conversations. The Wired Word class is vitally important to me; it is, I believe, a crown jewel in Christian

education. If there is a time that is better suited for more people to attend, let’s reschedule the class on another

day or at another time. I’ll be searching out those who have attended the class in the past for feedback, and I

hope that you’ll let me know what time works for you.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE HYMN?

There’s a loaded question. It’s like trying to pin down a movie favorite; as many people as you ask, that’s how

many answers you’ll get. Our preference for hymns (and, more broadly, music) is subjective. Everybody has a

different opinion and favorite. Selecting hymns that are sung each Sunday involves balancing factors, including

unifying theme and familiarity. Hymns elicit positive and negative feedback. Inevitably I’ll hear a recurring

question: “Why don’t we sing more of my favorites?”

Here’s your chance to weigh in. Your loyalty to just one hymn will be tested a bit, though, with a nod toward

the upcoming NCAA college basketball tournament. You’ll have to decide between two hymns. (Think of it as

a version of the “Would You Rather” game often played by church youth.)

On the following two pages, you’ll find a bracket listing hymns and their page number in the Glory to God

hymnal. Your challenge is to determine the winners in each matchup, narrowing the field. If you are reading

this in the newsletter, please note that the entire bracket, consisting of five rounds, is printed. (Only part

of the bracket – Round One – is printed in the March 13th Sunday bulletin.) In the first week (whether us-

ing the bracket from the newsletter or the bulletin), please complete only Round One, made up of the

long columns on the far left and right of the page. Then return that completed portion to the office by

Tuesday, March 15th. Results will be compiled and the next round, matching those winners with the most votes

against each other, will be inserted into the church bulletin for Sunday, March 20 th. That will continue through

the remaining rounds over the next few Sundays until a champion is selected. Then, we’ll use the 16 top win-

ners as our worship hymns during the summer.

You can miss a week and still participate. Each week’s results will be posted on easels that are placed in the

hallway leading to the sanctuary. Remember: Don’t fully fill in a bracket of all the rounds too early. Just com-

plete Round One first. Wait for each week’s results before completing the next round.

Don’t see a favorite of yours on the list? You can add it on one of the blank lines at the bottom of each round.

Shelby

Holy Week and Easter at FPC

PALM/PASSION SUNDAY Readers’ Theater March 20th - In worship on Sunday, March 20th, a team of readers will present the Palm and Passion story as presented in the Gospel of Luke.

One Great Hour of Sharing Offering, March 20 & 27 - Fish banks and Sharing Calendars have been passed out to our children; many more are available in the Parlor if you would like one to collect money for One Great Hour of Sharing! If you would like to “give now,” you may text OGHS at 20222 to donate $10. Thank you!!

MAUNDY THURSDAY Dinner & Worship March 24th - All are invited to Dinner and Worship on Maundy Thursday, March 24th in Blair Hall. We will join together for a meal—just like Jesus and his disciples did for the Last Supper at 5:30 pm, and then move into a meaningful Tenebrae Service, or a service of the shadows. Worship will include the sacrament of Communion. Childcare will be available for children age 5 and younger. FPC is providing boxed lunches from Schlotzsky’s® .

Please sign-up on the sheets in the hall way, if you plan to attend. Thank you!!

EASTER SUNDAY Easter Egg Hunt - The FPC Youth Groups will lead an Easter Egg Hunt for all children in 5th grade and younger on Easter Sunday, March 27th at 9 am. Families are asked to br ing a dozen filled plastic eggs per child for the hunt; please fill the eggs with age-appropriate treats (which don’t have be candy)!

Trivia Game - Adults of all ages are invited to join Rebecca and the Adult Education Committee for a fun game of Lent and Easter Trivia in the Parlor at 9 am on Easter Sunday, March 27th! We will have sweet treats and drinks for all—come and join the fun!

Flowering of the Cross - During Lent, we symbolically nailed our sins to the cross as part of the Prayer of Confession. Easter and Jesus' resurrection are God's triumphant answer that death is defeated and sin is pardoned. On Easter Sunday, please bring a flower -- or a bunch of flowers to share with visitors -- for a Flowering of the Cross to symbolize the victory of life over death and the forgiveness of our sins.

Walk to Jerusalem Through the Easter Season As we journey with Jesus, the Walk to Jerusalem encourages us to take care of the bodies God gave us through walking, running, chair exercises, and aerobics. Physical activity will add years to your life, and life to your years. From Salina to Jerusalem, it is 6,711 miles “ as the crow flies.” Kids and Adults: Pick up a passport to track your miles and activities each day, and we will track our distance as a congregation. Walk to Jerusalem Devotional Packets are also available to help you reflect and pray as you walk and move! Please turn your miles in to Brigid Hall who will track our progress!

Set your clocks ahead

1 hour before you go to

bed Saturday, Mar 12th!
