Chers collègues et amis,

J’espère que vous êtes tous bien reposés et prêts à entreprendre les saisons automnale et hivernale qui sont à nos portes! Dans ce message, j’aimerais partager avec vous certains détails à propos de notre assemblée générale annuelle qui aura lieu à Québec, de même que certaines initiatives récentes de la Société.

Les préparatifs vont bon train pour notre congrès à Québec et nous sommes sûrs qu’il s’agira d’un événement mémorable pour tous. Comme vous l’avez probablement remarqué, nous avons dû repousser le congrès d’une semaine. Les nouvelles dates, du 16 au 19 juin 2018, figurent sur notre site Web. Aux dates originales, l’hôtel et les installations du congrès ont été réservés pour un événement qui aurait fait ombrage au nôtre (le Sommet du G7 dont le Canada a obtenu la présidence en 2018) et créé des problèmes de logistique considérables. Nous avons jugé qu’il était préférable que la Société reporte son congrès et je suis convaincu que vous serez d’accord avec cette décision. L’hôtel et le centre des congrès ont été très coopératifs et nous avons réussi à obtenir certaines concessions financières contre le report du congrès d’une semaine.

Cette année, le programme d’activités sociales de l’AGA sera sous la gouverne de Sophie Lachance avec le concours de ses collègues de la ville de Québec, et il promet d’être remarquable. L’hôtel du congrès sera le Fairmont Château Frontenac et le programme du congrès se tiendra au Centre des Congrès de Québec, à une distance de marche de 10 à 11 minutes du Château, au cœur du Vieux-Québec. La réception de bienvenue aura lieu au Musée de la Civilisation (en contrebas du Château Frontenac). Le banquet présidentiel se tiendra dans la magnifique salle de bal du Château Frontenac et de fabuleux divertissements sont prévus pendant la soirée. Le congrès sera profamille (enfants et adolescents) et nous vous encourageons à amener les membres de votre famille avec vous, si vous le souhaitez. Si vous décidez de le faire, veuillez en aviser Donna ou Kim au secrétariat de la SCO-CCF afin que nous puissions prévoir les ressources nécessaires.

Cette année, l’AGA sera sous le thème « Oto-rhino-laryngologistes et chirurgiens cervico-faciaux – chefs de file en matière d’enseignement » et de nombreux exemples viennent appuyer cet énoncé. Notre groupe de l’enseignement médical de premier cycle, sous la gouverne de Laurie McLean, Adrian Gooi et Kevin Fung, et l’engagement et les efforts soutenus des coordonnateurs des Études médicales de premier cycle à l’échelle du Canada, a élaboré un programme d’études standardisé et fourni de précieuses ressources sur notre site Web aux étudiants en médecine de partout dans le monde. Nos effectifs en enseignement universitaire supérieur, appuyés par notre Comité des spécialités du CRMCC et le groupe des directeurs de programmes de la SCO-CCF, ont également fait un travail impressionnant. Notre spécialité a été sélectionnée, conjointement avec une autre, pour diriger la mise en œuvre de la révolution tutorielle que constitue la compétence par conception, grâce entre autres à la vision et au leadership de nos présidents de comité passés et actuels, Brian Westerberg et Wayne Matthews. Enfin, puisque notre programme de perfectionnement par l’entremise du CRMCC est devenu très exigeant, le Comité de la FPC, dirigé au cours des dernières années par Sam Daniel, Gigi Osler et leurs équipes, a su s’adapter. Les programmes sophistiqués qu’ils ont mis au point ont permis à la Société de continuer d’octroyer de précieux crédits (notamment des crédits de catégorie 3, les plus difficiles à obtenir) à nos membres. L’influence de l’oto-rhino-laryngologie et chirurgie cervico-faciale sur l’enseignement à l’échelle nationale, et à tous les niveaux, est beaucoup plus grande que notre seule empreinte physique et le crédit en va à notre spécialité et à notre Société.

Automne 2017 Dear Colleagues and Friends:

I trust that this message finds you all feeling rested and energized for productive Fall and Winter seasons! In this message I’d like to share with you some details regarding our Annual General Meeting in Quebec City as well as some recent goings-on on the part of the Society.

Preparations are well underway for our meeting in Quebec City and we are confident that it will be a memorable event for all. As you have hopefully noted, we have had to move the meeting one week later than originally planned. The new dates are highlighted on our website and are June 16-19, 2018. On our original dates the hotel and convention facilities are required for an event that would have dwarfed ours (the G7 Summit of which Canada holds the Presidency for 2018), and created considerable logistical challenges. It was felt to be in the best interests of the Society to move our meeting and I am sure that you will agree. The hotel and convention centre were quite accommodating and we were able to gain some financial concessions for agreeing to move our dates.

The social program for the AGM this year is taking shape under the sophisticated eye of Sophie Lachance and her colleagues from Quebec City and promises to be outstanding. The conference hotel will be the Fairmont Château Frontenac with the Conference Program taking place in the state of the art Centre des Congrès de Québec, a pleasant 10-11-minute walk from the Château through the old city. The Welcome Reception will be held at the Musée de la Civilization (just down the hill from the Château Frontenac). The President’s Banquet will be held in the magnificent ballroom at the Château Frontenac and some exciting entertainment is planned for this evening. The meeting is being organized to be family friendly (kids to teens) and we encourage you to bring your families if possible. Should you plan to do so, please let Donna or Kim at the CSOHNS office know of your plans so that we can have appropriate resources available.

The AGM this year will run with the theme of “Otolaryngologists-Head & Neck Surgeons – Leaders in Education” and there are numerous examples to support this premise. Our Undergraduate Education group under the recent leadership of Laurie McLean, Adrian Gooi, and Kevin Fung, with amazing commitment and hard work of the UGME coordinators from across the country, have developed a standardized curriculum and provided valuable resources on our website for medical students from around the world. Our leadership in Postgraduate Education, supported by our Specialty Committee of the RCPSC and the Program Directors group of the CSOHNS, has been equally impressive. Our specialty was selected to be one of two to lead the implementation of the curricular revolution that is Competence by Design, in no small part due to the vision and leadership of our past and current Specialty Committee Chairs, Brian Westerberg and Wayne Matthews. Finally, as our Professional Development program through the RCPSC has become ever more demanding, our CPD Committee, led in recent years by Sam Daniel and Gigi Osler and their teams, have adapted. Their sophisticated programs have enabled the Society to continue to provide invaluable credits (particularly Category 3 – the most difficult to obtain) to our membership. The influence of OHNS in education across the country, and at all levels, is much larger than our physical footprint and this is a credit to our Specialty and our Society.

L’élaboration du programme scientifique et d’enseignement de l’AGA est à peine commencée, l’appel des résumés ayant été lancé depuis peu, mais nous pouvons déjà dire qu’il s’agira d’un assortiment remarquable de présentations nationales et internationales. Nos invités d’honneur seront le Professeur Claire Hopkins de Londres, R.-U., et le Professeur Richard Harvey de Sydney, Australie, deux sommités mondiales en rhinologie. Nous recevrons également Monsieur André Picard, journaliste en santé publique au Globe and Mail, dont l’intervention sera certainement très pertinente. En raison de l’agitation qui sévit actuellement dans notre réseau de santé, je suis convaincu que nous saurons apprécier sa présence. Notre invité d’honneur, le Dr Howard Lampe, un ancien président de notre Société et un grand oto-rhino-laryngologiste et chirurgien cervico-facial, maintenant à la retraite, et un leader en enseignement de renom, partagera avec nous ses perspectives sur le passé et l’avenir de notre Société. En sa qualité de président du Programme scientifique sortant, je sais que Brian Rotenberg fera appel à son expérience et à sa sagesse pour mettre sur pied un programme qui ira au-delà des attentes, comme toujours.

J’aimerais aussi attirer votre attention sur un autre sujet, la modification des frais d’inscription à l’assemblée générale annuelle. Lors de la réunion du Conseil d’administration, et à l’assemblée administrative annuelle à Saskatoon, il a été approuvé que le coût d’inscription au congrès pour les oto-rhino-laryngologistes et chirurgiens cervico-faciaux qui ne sont pas membres de la SCO-CCF corresponde au montant de la cotisation annuelle + les frais d’inscription des membres de la SCO-CCF. Cette démarche permettra d’éliminer tout incitatif à ne pas devenir membre en éliminant l’avantage financier de ne payer que les frais d’inscription légèrement plus élevés pour les non-membres. Ainsi, nous espérons encourager davantage d’oto-rhino-laryngologistes et de chirurgiens cervico-faciaux à rallier les rangs de la Société et à contribuer à notre dynamique spécialité à l’échelle nationale, de même qu’à profiter des avantages d’appartenir à la Société, notamment la couverture des coûts de publication dans le Journal d’oto-rhino-laryngologie et de chirurgie cervico-faciale, de même que des possibilités de FPC offertes exclusivement aux membres (en espérant que davantage de ces possibilités soient offertes à l’avenir). Le Conseil a examiné attentivement la possibilité d’augmenter les frais d’inscription à l’AGA pour les non-membres et a déterminé qu’il s’agissait de la bonne décision en regard de nos responsabilités de respect et de reddition envers nos membres qui paient leur cotisation et s’engagent pour la Société.

Enfin, un autre sujet de débat chez les praticiens de notre spécialité est le meilleur moyen de désigner notre spécialité. Oto-rhino-laryngologie et chirurgie cervico-faciale, ORL, ORL-CCF, ou chirurgie cervico-faciale? Dans le cadre de nos Grands débats à l’AGA de l’an dernier, nous avons tenu un débat pour tenter de déterminer si le terme « oto-rhino-laryngologie » devrait être retiré du nom de notre spécialité. Nous remercions Paul Kerr, Mark Taylor, John Yoo et Brian Westerberg d’avoir accepté d’animer le débat avec leurs compétences oratoires. Le débat a été fructueux et respectueux de part et d’autre et en conclusion, après un vote des participants, il a été décidé que le terme oto-rhino-laryngologie devait être conservé. Précisons que le titre officiel de notre spécialité au CRMCC, qui représente la ressource principale pour les organismes de réglementation professionnelle et la majorité des universités, est « oto-rhino-laryngologie et chirurgie cervico-faciale ». Nous ne pouvons le changer que par un processus complexe à l’échelon du CRMCC, processus qui a été utilisé à une seule reprise en 2009 pour nous permettre d’ajouter « chirurgie cervico-faciale » au nom de la spécialité. Je crois bien, même si je ne suis pas personnellement d’accord avec l’idée, que la spécialité dans son ensemble devra accepter le volet ORL de notre pratique médicale et chirurgicale d’une certaine façon. D’une part, bien que le terme soit parfois utilisé dans des combinaisons plus ou moins heureuses, il faudrait voir le terme ORL de façon positive; il est très certainement facile à comprendre pour nos patients et pour le public en général. D’autre part, nous pourrions aussi vouloir marquer notre territoire dans les universités, les établissements de soins de santé, la gouvernance clinique et les organismes de réglementation professionnelle d’autre façon, conservant la terminologie d’origine latine ou certaines de ses nouvelles variantes qui font état de l’étendue véritable de notre pratique actuelle. J’ai l’impression que la discussion se poursuivra longtemps encore…

The scientific and educational program for the AGM is only just beginning to take shape, with the call for submissions having just been made, however, we can share with you what is sure to be an outstanding national and international line-up. As plenary keynote speakers we have Prof. Claire Hopkins from London, UK and Prof. Richard Harvey from Sydney, Australia, two of the current world leaders in Rhinology. We have also secured Mr. André Picard, health care policy journalist with the Globe and Mail, as a highly relevant plenary speaker. Given the current turmoil within and without our health care system, I am sure his insights will be welcome. Our guest of honour will be Dr. Howard Lampe, a former president of our Society and a now-retired but highly accomplished Otolaryngologist-Head & Neck Surgeon and academic leader who will share with us his perspectives on where our specialty has been and where it may be going. In what will be his swan song as Scientific Program Chair, I am sure that Brian Rotenberg will use all of his experience and wisdom to develop a program that will exceed expectations, as always.

Another topic, which I would like to bring to your collective attention, is changes that you will notice in fees for the Annual General Meeting. At the Council Meeting, and subsequently ratified at the Business Meeting in Saskatoon, it was approved that the cost of the meeting registration for non-CSOHNS member Otolaryngologists-HNS will essentially equal that of CSOHNS membership + member registration fee. This will remove any perceived incentive to avoid becoming a member by removing the financial advantage of paying the only slightly higher AGM fee for non-members. This will hopefully encourage more Otolaryngologist-Head & Neck Surgeons to join our Society and contribute to our vibrant specialty at a national level as well as to avail themselves of the perks of membership which include cost-coverage for publication in the Journal of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery as well as CPD opportunities only available to members (with more of these opportunities hopefully coming in the future). The Council gave considerable thought on the action of raising the AGM registration for non-members and felt that this was the correct decision in view of our responsibility to be respectful and accountable to our dues paying and committed members. Finally, a common topic of debate amongst our specialty practitioners is the best way to refer to our specialty. Is it Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, ENT, OHNS, Oto-HNS, or Head & Neck Surgery? As part of our Great Debate series at the AGM this past year we did, indeed, debate the question of whether the term Otolaryngology should be dropped from our specialty name. Thanks are extended to Paul Kerr, Mark Taylor, John Yoo, and Brian Westerberg for lending their elocution skills to the event. The debate was eloquent and thoughtful on both sides with the conclusion, based on audience vote, that we should not drop the term Otolaryngology from the name. To be clear, the official designation of our specialty at the level of the RCPSC, from which licensing bodies and most universities take their lead, is Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. We cannot change it without a complex process at the level of the RCPSC, a process which only occurred in 2009 to allow us to add Head and Neck Surgery to the specialty name. I believe, despite my personal opinion to the contrary, that the specialty as a whole will need to embrace the Ear Nose and Throat aspect (Otolaryngology) of our medical and surgical specialty in some fashion. While it is sometimes used in less than complimentary variations, we may wish to consider wearing the ENT as a badge of honour; it is certainly easier for our patients and the lay public to understand. At the same time, we may also wish to stake our territory within universities, health care facilities, clinical governance and licensing bodies in a different fashion, maintaining the Latin-based terminology or some of its newer variants that reflect the true breadth of our current practice. I suspect the discussion will continue in coming years… I look forward to seeing you all to Quebec City at what will undoubtedly be a superb meeting scientifically, educationally, culturally, and socially. Autumn is here and I hope that everyone had a restful summer. Now that the academic year, conferences and meetings have started up again, here are two tips to maximize your Section 2: Self-learning activities MOC credits:

1. Read the posters at the conference. Poster reading may be recorded under Section 2: Self-learning activities of the MOC program as ‘poster viewing’ for 0.5 credits per poster. Take a photo of the poster, as you must record the title in MAINPORT. You must also record what you learned or what additional learning you are planning to complete or what changes you are planning to implement in your practice.

2. Listen to podcasts. Podcasts present information in an engaging, bite-sized and

digestible manner with up-to-date information that often prioritizes the latest innovations and technologies. There are two ways to use podcasts in your MOC:

• Claim podcast listening under Section 2: Self-learning activities as ‘podcast,

audio’ for 0.5 credits per podcast. In MAINPORT, you must enter the name of the podcast. You must also record what you learned or what additional learning you are planning to complete or what changes you are planning to implement in your practice.

• Listen to the podcast and develop a Personal Learning Project (PLP) for two credits per hour.

I am very pleased to be asked to serve as the co-editor of the Journal of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery. I am a staff physician at the University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, as well as a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Toronto, and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan. Prior to this, I was a full-time, tenured professor at the University of Michigan, where I directed the surgical oncology fellowship and co-directed the research committee and tissue core. I began my academic career at The University of Alberta, where I completed my undergraduate degree in medical sciences, Doctor of Medicine (MD) and postgraduate preliminary general surgery. Then I attended the University of British Columbia where I completed my residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. After residency, I pursued fellowship training in microsurgical reconstruction and surgical oncology at The University of Toronto. This was followed by a 2-year Advanced Training Council Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Michigan where I also obtained a Master’s of Science in Public Health. Throughout my career I have served on a number of administrative committees both locally and internationally, including: the American Head and Neck Society, South West Oncology Group, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, NRG Oncology, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, and the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. During this time, I have published over 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals and have been an investigator for a number of nationally funded studies. Many of my research interests relate to clinical and translational questions in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery, with a strong focus on clinical trials, epidemiology, and multidisciplinary prospective clinical research. Dr. Erin Wright and Dr. Hadi Seikaly have done an excellent job of successfully navigating the Journal through the difficult world of on-line publishing. I must thank them for the fantastic infrastructure that they have put in place, and am looking forward to spending the next year getting to know the team. I am looking for input from our readers so that the Journal remains interesting and relevant. Many thanks to the Canadian Society for the dedicated support of the Journal. I hope to continue to involve a broad range of Society members from across the country and continue to reach out across borders to increase the readership and impact of our Journal. C’est avec plaisir que j’ai accepté de servir de co-rédacteur du Journal d’oto-rhino-laryngologie et de chirurgie cervico-faciale. Je suis médecin au University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital à Toronto, de même que professeur au Département d’oto-rhino-laryngologie de l’Université de Toronto, et professeur auxiliaire à l’Université du Michigan. Dans le passé, j’ai été professeur à temps plein à l’Université du Michigan, où je dirigeais la bourse de recherche en oncologie chirurgicale et co-dirigeais le Comité de recherche sur les tissus.

J’ai entrepris mes études de médecine à l’Université de l’Alberta où j’ai obtenu mon diplôme de premier cycle en sciences médicales, mon doctorat en médecine et un diplôme d’études supérieures en chirurgie générale. Par la suite, j’ai fait ma résidence en oto-rhino-laryngologie et chirurgie cervico-faciale à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Après ma résidence, j’ai fait une bourse de recherche en reconstruction microchirurgicale et en oncologie chirurgicale à l’Université de Toronto. J’ai ensuite suivi l’Advanced Training Council Surgical Oncology Fellowship à l’Université du Michigan où j’ai également obtenu une maîtrise en santé publique.

Au cours de ma carrière, j’ai été membre de quelques comités administratifs, à l’échelle locale et internationale, notamment ce qui suit : American Head and Neck Society, South West Oncology Group, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, NRG Oncology, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery et la Société canadienne d’oto-rhino-laryngologie et de chirurgie cervico-faciale. Une fois encore, j’aimerais remercier tous ceux qui ont contribué à l’obtention de la tenue du congrès mondial de la FISO en 2021. Leurs conseils, leur engagement et leurs efforts, passés et présents, ont été essentiels pour nous permettre de tenir cet événement mondial au Canada pour la première fois.

Le congrès aura lieu du 19 au 23 juin 2021 au majestueux Vancouver Convention Centre. Cette installation à la fine pointe de la technologie se trouve dans le secteur riverain au cœur du centre-ville de Vancouver. En plus de ses paysages à couper le souffle, Vancouver offre de nombreux avantages. Notamment une bonne accessibilité de partout dans le monde, un réseau de transport moderne, abordable et efficace qui est lié à l’aéroport, et une vaste gamme d’hôtels à la fois de classe mondiale et abordables. Il n’y a aucun doute que nos collègues de partout dans le monde apprécieront cette ville accueillante, sûre et multiculturelle.

Le thème du congrès sera « Mondialisation des soins de santé : répercussions pour l’oto-rhino-laryngologie et la chirurgie cervico-faciale ». Ce congrès nous offrira une occasion exceptionnelle de promouvoir le rassemblement de collègues de partout dans le monde pour partager des connaissances et la compréhension des conditions oto-rhino-laryngologiques et cervico-faciales mondiales et de bâtir des relations entre professionnels de milieux culturels diversifiés. Il nous permettra aussi de mettre en valeur le travail innovateur exceptionnel que nous faisons au Canada. Les recettes du congrès serviront au Fonds COCCF pour le financement d’activités de rayonnement, de recherche, de représentation et d’enseignement.

Once again, I would like to thank all those who helped us secure the 2021 IFOS World Congress. Their guidance, commitment, and efforts, both past and present, were essential in bring this world event to Canada for the first time. The conference will be held on June 19 – 23, 2021 at the impressive Vancouver Convention Centre. This state-of-the-art facility is located on the waterfront in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer que deux subventions de bourses de recherche canadiennes ont été remises en 2017. Nos félicitations au Dr Brittany Barber, de l’Université de l’Alberta, et au Dr Elise Graham de l’Université Dalhousie.

Le Dr Graham fait une bourse de recherche en pédiatrie à l’Université de l’Utah. Il s’agit d’un centre régional de soins tertiaires desservant l’Utah, le Wyoming, l’Idaho et une partie du Colorado. Son horaire très chargé lui permet d’acquérir une vaste gamme d’expériences.

Le Dr Barber travaille en oncologie cervico-faciale et en reconstruction microvasculaire au Mt. Sinai Hospital à New York.

Nous sommes tous impatients d’entendre leurs commentaires au congrès annuel en juin prochain.

Pour les années 2018, deux (2) bourses de recherche sans affectation particulière, de l’ordre de 25 000 $ chacune, seront offertes. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme de la Faculté de médecine de l’Université de l’Alberta, le Dr Giovanetto a suivi un programme de médecine familiale au Misericordia Hospital d’Edmonton, puis a fait sa résidence en oto-rhino-laryngologie et chirurgie cervico-faciale à l’Université de l’Alberta. Il a ensuite commencé sa pratique au Stanton Hospital de Yellowknife, et plusieurs années plus tard, il a suivi une bourse de recherche abrégée en oto-rhino-laryngologie et otologie pédiatriques à Columbia, Missouri, pour ensuite revenir à Yellowknife.

Même s’il ne devait d’abord rester que de deux à quatre ans à Yellowknife, le Dr Giovanetto a constaté que l’environnement de pratique du Nord canadien était très engageant. Il apprécie l’étendue et la diversité du travail et se déplace sur des centaines de milliers de kilomètres pour offrir des soins en oto-rhino-laryngologie à diverses communautés dans les Territoires du Nord-Ouest et l’Ouest du Nunavut. Au cours des années, il a su acquérir une vaste expérience de l’otopathie chronique, très présente chez la population autochtone, principalement chez les Inuits. Avec les années passées dans le Nord, plusieurs générations de familles ont appris à reconnaître son nom et son visage, et ont apprécié la continuité des soins prodigués. Son engagement envers le Nord s’est étendu à la communauté des soins de santé et il a occupé divers postes administratifs à Stanton. Le Dr Giovanetto trouve très gratifiant de travailler dans une communauté médicale qui favorise la collégialité et de collaborer avec tous les médecins suppléants et autres qui offrent leurs services aux populations des Territoires du Nord-Ouest.

We are pleased to announce that two Canadian Fellowship Grants have been awarded for 2017. Our congratulation goes to Dr. Brittany Barber, from the University of Alberta and Dr. Elise Graham from Dalhousie University. Dr. Graham is doing a pediatric fellowship at the University of Utah. It is the tertiary referral center for Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and part of Colorado. She’s kept very busy, and it is providing her with a broad range of experiences. Dr. Barber is doing a head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction at the busy Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. We are all looking forward to hearing more about their experiences during the Quebec Annual Meeting next June.

For 2018, two (2) undesignated fellowship awards, in the amount of $25,000 each, will be available. The deadline for next year’s applications is February 15, 2018. 2017 Prix d’excellence Specialist of the Year (Region 1)

Dr. Donald Giovanetto, FRCSC, CCFP, DABO The Society would like to congratulate member Dr. Don Giovanetto on receiving the RCPSC’s Specialist of the Year Award for Region 1.

After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta, Dr. Giovanetto completed a Family Medicine program at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton, followed by an Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery residency at the University of Alberta. He then entered practice at Stanton Hospital in Yellowknife, and several years later completed an abbreviated six-month fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology and Otology in Columbia, Missouri, returning to Yellowknife afterwards.

Though only intending to stay in Yellowknife for 2-4 years, Dr. Giovanetto found the unique practice environment of Canada’s north very engaging. He has enjoyed the breadth and variety of work, and has travelled hundreds of thousands of kilometers providing otolaryngology services to various communities throughout the Northwest Territories and western Nunavut. Over the years he has developed a broad experience in the treatment of chronic ear disease that is so prevalent in the indigenous population, especially the Inuit. During his time in the north, he has become a familiar name and face to several generations of families, providing continuity of care. His commitment to the north has extended into the health community, serving in various administrative positions at Stanton. Dr. Giovanetto has found it extremely rewarding to work among a very supportive and collegial medical community in the north, as well as the many locum physicians who have provided service in the Northwest Territories.

Cette année, l’assemblée annuelle de la Société a été tenue dans la province de la Saskatchewan pour la première fois (10 au 13 juin). Saskatoon est une ville adorable que traverse la belle rivière Saskatchewan. Les délégués ont profité pleinement des magnifiques sentiers de marche et de randonnée bordant la rivière. Les restaurants et les bistros de l’endroit ont connu un vif succès. La visite des personnes accompagnantes de la Lucky’s Bastard Distillery s’est terminée par un dîner au Ayden’s Kitchen, un restaurant qui appartient à Dale Mackay, gagnant de Top Chef Canada. À tous les égards, l’événement a été des plus appréciés.

Nous sommes reconnaissants au Dr Mark Taylor, président, pour son leadership pendant toute l’année et pour ses nombreuses années de service au FONDS COCCF.

Une fois encore, nous tenons à témoigner notre gratitude au Dr Brian Rotenberg pour l’organisation d’un excellent programme scientifique. Le thème du congrès, Soins transformationnels en oto-rhino-laryngologie et chirurgie cervico-faciale, a été bien accueilli par les délégués. Les conférenciers invités, les Drs Sujana Chandrasekhar, New York, NY, Holger Gassner, Regensburg, Allemagne, et Gregory Farwell, Sacramento, CA, ont chacun donné d’excellentes présentations, en plus de participer à diverses autres séances pendant le congrès. En outre, nous tenons à remercier notre invité d’honneur cette année, le Dr Simon Kirby, de St. John’s, T.-N., dont l’allocution a été très inspirante.

Nous remercions aussi le Dr Peter Spafford, et son épouse Deidra, pour l’organisation du programme d’activités sociales. Tous les événements ont soulevé un vif intérêt.

En terminant, merci à tous les présentateurs, les exposants et les sociétés commanditaires qui ont participé. Sans leur participation et leur soutien, les assemblées annuelles n’auraient pas autant de succès.

This year the Society’s Annual Meeting was held for the first time in the province of Saskatchewan (June 10 – 13). Saskatoon is a lovely city with the advantage of having the beautiful S. Saskatchewan river running through it. Delegates took full advantage of the beautiful green walking and biking trails that hug its shores. The city’s local restaurants and bistros were a big hit. The companions’ tour of Lucky’s Bastard Distillery ended with lunch at Ayden’s Kitchen, a restaurant owned by Top Chef Canada’s Dale Mackay. By all accounts everyone had a terrific time!

We are grateful to Dr. Mark Taylor, President, for his leadership throughout the year and for his many years of service to the Society and the COHNS Fund.

Once again, we owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Brian Rotenberg for putting together an excellent scientific program. The theme “Transformational Care in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery” was well received by the delegates. Guest speakers, Drs. Sujana Chandrasekhar, New York, NY, Holger Gassner, Regensburg, Germany, and Gregory Farwell, Sacramento, CA, each gave exceptional plenary presentations as well as participated in additional sessions throughout the meeting. In addition, we would like to acknowledge this year’s guest of honour, Dr. Simon Kirby from St. John’s, NL, whose plenary talk was truly inspirational.

A very special thank-you to Dr. Peter and Mrs. Deidra Spafford for organizing the social program. All the events were very enjoyable. In addition, we would like to acknowledge and thank all the annual meeting presenters, exhibiting companies and corporate sponsors. Without their participation and support the annual meetings would not succeed!

Next year the 2018 Annual Meeting will be held on June 16 – 19 in picturesque Quebec City. The sessions will take place at the Centre des Congrès de Québec with the Fairmont Château Frontenac being the official conference hotel. Dr. Irwin Fraser Stewart 1930 – 2017

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Irwin Fraser Stewart on June 5, 2017 in New Westminster, BC surrounded by his family. Born October 20, 1930 in Swan River, Manitoba, Irwin is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Lois. Father to Rob (Kathy), Margaret (Trevor), and Jamie (Laurie). Grandfather to Nathan, Lauren, Nadine, Sarah, Ben, Fraser, Emma and Kate. Irwin Stewart will forever be remembered for his service to the community, particularly in the medical field and in the areas of children and youth. He was awarded the Order of Canada (2001) and the Order of British Columbia (2002) to recognize his efforts to bring health care to remote and underserved communities in BC, the Yukon and the developing world. Irwin and Lois spearheaded many overseas humanitarian health projects and dedicated much of their retirement to improving Hearing Health Care in Africa, particularly in Zimbabwe and Uganda. Locally, they were involved in numerous organizations - Shiloh United Church youth group, the Junior Salmonbellies, UBC Rowing, and the Vancouver Oral School for the Deaf. Irwin was a dedicated member of Rotary International and served as the Chairman of the Rotary Youth Exchange Committee for many years in addition to serving as President, Rotary Club of New Westminster (1989/90) and District Governor (1993/94). He was a Paul Harris Fellow, a recipient of the Rotary International Service Above Self award, and the first ever to receive the Donald MacRae Peace Award, recognizing and honouring outstanding achievement. Irwin and Lois were truly a dynamic couple who together made an impact on many lives. Dr. Stewart was recognized as a pioneer in the medical profession, was a full Clinical Professor at UBC, Head of Otolaryngology, Professor Emeritus, and a member of the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons (FRCS), and was presented with the prestigious Mosher Award (1981) by the American Triologic Society. He also served as president or board member for the BC Otolaryngology Society, BC Hearing Aid Board, BC College of Physicians and Surgeons, Canadian Society of Otolaryngology and numerous Federal Task Forces. He was truly dedicated to health care in New Westminster, serving as Saint Mary's Hospital - Chief of Staff (1976 - 1981) and Saint Mary's Health Foundation (Chair 2003 - 2014). Irwin will forever be remembered as a humble and kind humanitarian.

Dr. John Murray ("Bud") Frederickson 1931 - 2017

It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of John Frederickson on April 5, 2017. Born in Winnipeg of Icelandic descent, he is survived by his wife Alix (nee Gordon), daughters Kristin and Lisa, son Erik; niece Signy (Lowell, Silas) and nephew Grant Jon Fredrickson, and nieces Francesca Robyn and Marney (Liam, Laura) Peppiatt. John grew up in Vancouver, and attended the University of British Columbia, were he received a degree in Medicine. He pursued a long and distinguished career in Academic Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, beginning at the University of Chicago, where he interned, the University of Freiburg, Germany, where he was a research fellow, and Stanford University for his first teaching position. Returning to Canada, John was Head of Clinical Sciences at the University of Toronto for 15 years. Capping his career, he served from 1982 to 2002 as Lindburgh Professor and Head of the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at Washington University, St. Louis. Over the course of his tenure in medicine, John served as President of the American Laryngological Association, and became a member of the Barany Society Executive, in addition to chairing the Examining Committee of Otolaryngology for the RCPSC. John was a member of the American Board of Otolaryngology and served as editor of the American Journal of Otolaryngology. He was a long-standing member of the prestigious Collegium Oto- Rhino-Laryngologicum, and Chairman of the Research Committee for the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. He was a member of grant review committees for the Medical Research Council of Canada, and the American National Institute of Health. John made significant research contributions to the fields of vestibular neurophysiology and microvascular reconstructive surgery of the head and neck. Affectionately known as "Bud", his conscientious, kindly presence was appreciated by all. Ever the athlete, he followed many sports but particularly his beloved soccer. Johns' life story would not be complete without mention of his love for jazz and classical music. His has been a unique, eventful life. He will be deeply missed.

Dr Irwin Fraser Stewart 1930 – 2017

C’est avec une grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès du Dr Irwin Fraser Stewart le 5 juin 2017 à New Westminster, C.-B., entourés des siens. Né le 20 octobre 1930 à Swan River, Manitoba, Irwin laisse dans le deuil son épouse depuis plus de 60 ans, Lois. Il était le père de Rob (Kathy), Margaret (Trevor) et Jamie (Laurie) et le grand-père de Nathan, Lauren, Nadine, Sarah, Ben, Fraser, Emma et Kate. Irwin Stewart restera à jamais dans nos mémoires pour ses services à la communauté, particulièrement dans le domaine des soins médicaux aux enfants et aux jeunes. Il a reçu l’Ordre du Canada (2001) et l’Ordre de la Colombie-Britannique (2002) en reconnaissance de ses efforts pour assurer des soins de santé dans des communautés éloignées et insuffisamment desservies en Colombie-Britannique, au Yukon et dans le monde en développement. Irwin et Lois ont organisé de nombreux projets humanitaires outremer et consacré une grande partie de leur retraite à l’amélioration des soins auditifs en Afrique, notamment au Zimbabwe et en Ouganda. À l’échelle locale, ils étaient membres de nombreuses organisations – groupe jeunesse Shiloh United Church, Junior Salmonbellies, UBC Rowing et Vancouver Oral School for the Deaf. Irwin était un membre dévoué de Rotary International et a été président du Rotary Youth Exchange Committee pendant de nombreuses années, en plus d’être président (1989/90) et gouverneur du district (1993/94) du Club Rotary de New Westminster. Il était Paul Harris Fellow, lauréat du prix Rotary International Service Above Self, et le premier récipiendaire du Donald MacRae Peace Award, reconnaissant et honorant les grandes réalisations. Irwin et Lois formaient un couple dynamique qui avait une influence positive dans la vie de bien des gens. Le Dr Stewart a été reconnu en tant que pionnier de la profession médicale, était professeur clinicien à l’UCB, chef du Département d’oto-rhino-laryngologie, professeur émérite et associé du Collège royal des chirurgiens du Canada (FRCSC) et il a reçu le prestigieux Mosher Award (1981) remis par l’American Triologic Society. Il a également été président ou membre de comité de la BC Otolaryngology Society, du BC Hearing Aid Board, du BC College of Physicians and Surgeons, de la Société canadienne d’oto-rhino-laryngologie et de chirurgie cervico-faciale et de nombreux groupes de travail fédéraux. Il était dévoué aux soins de santé à New Westminster; il a été médecin-chef au Saint Mary’s Hospital (1976 - 1981) et a siégé à la Saint Mary’s Health Foundation (président de 2003 à 2014). L’humilité et la bonté d’Irwin resteront gravées dans nos mémoires à jamais.

Dr John Murray (« Bud ») Frederickson 1931 - 2017

C’est avec tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de John Frederickson le 5 avril 2017. Né à Winnipeg, de descendance islandaise, il laisse dans le deuil son épouse, Alix (née Gordon), ses filles Kristin et Lisa, son fils Erik; sa nièce Signy (Lowell, Silas) et son neveu Grant Jon Fredrickson, de même que ses nièces Francesca Robyn et Marney (Liam, Laura) Peppiatt. John a grandi à Vancouver et a fréquenté l’Université de Colombie-Britannique où il a obtenu son diplôme en médecine. Il a connu une longue et éminente carrière universitaire en oto-rhino-laryngologie et chirurgie cervico-faciale, d’abord à l’Université de Chicago, où il a fait son internat, à l’Université de Freiburg, Allemagne, où il a été boursier de recherche, puis à l’Université de Stanford où il a obtenu son premier poste d’enseignant. De retour au Canada, John a été chef du Département des sciences cliniques à l’Université de Toronto pendant 15 ans. Au cours de sa carrière, de 1982 à 2002, il a été professeur et chef du Département d’oto-rhino-laryngologie et de chirurgie cervico-faciale à l’Université de Washington, à St. Louis. John a été président de l’American Laryngological Association et est devenu membre du Conseil d’administration de la Barany Society, en plus de présider le Comité d’examen en oto-rhino-laryngologie du CRMCC. John a été membre de l’American Board of Otolaryngology et rédacteur en chef de l’American Journal of Otolaryngology. Il a longtemps été membre du prestigieux Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum, et président du Comité de recherche de l’American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. Il a aussi été membre de comités d’examen des subventions pour le Conseil de recherches médicales du Canada et pour l’American National Institute of Health. John a largement contribué aux recherches dans les domaines de la neurophysiologie vestibulaire et de la chirurgie de reconstruction microvasculaire cervico-faciale. Affectueusement surnommé « Bud », sa présence attentive était appréciée de tous. Fervent athlète, il a pratiqué de nombreux sports, mais plus particulièrement le soccer. Le récit de vie de John ne serait pas complet si l’on oubliait de parler de son amour pour le jazz et la musique classique. Il a eu une vie unique et bien remplie. John nous manquera grandement.

FULL-TIME OTOLARYNGOLOGIST, OWEN SOUND, ON Grey Bruce Health Services (http://www.gbhs.on.ca/) operates six hospital in the Grey Bruce region with its Level 2 regional referral hospital located in the City of Owen Sound. A full range of specialty services are offered through the Departments of Anesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Urology).

Thriving rural hospitals are located in the communities of Lion’s Head, Markdale, Meaford, Southampton and Wiarton servicing a range of ambulatory, in-patient and emergency needs.

GBHS has an immediate opening in one full-time otolaryngologist to join the team. Specialists provide on-call support, in-patient surgical services, and outpatient consultations and follow-up to a wide catchment area of over 170,000 residents and more than 2 million short-stay visitors each year.

Operating Room time is based at the Owen Sound hospital as part of the Division of Otolaryngology. The On-call distribution will be 1 in 3.
