    Elections Update?

The Togo election commission has announced that elections could take place in early July 2013 afterelections have been repeatedly postponed due to a wave of protest action calling for electoral reform. The elections were first scheduled for October, then postponed to March and then delayed withoutexplanation.

"In view of all the tasks that have to be accomplished, we can hold the elections in the very first weekof July," said chairman of the commission, Angele Dola Aguigah.

She did not give a precise date for the poll, which will have to be confirmed by the Government.Aguigah added that local elections expected to be held the same time as the parliamentary poll wouldnot take place; although no reason was given. About 3.1 million voters were registered during voters'registration last month.

Major opposition political parties have organized demonstrations in the capital Lome for reformsincluding the re-composition of the electoral body, which has often been broken up by police firingtear-gas.

They have also called for the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbe, who has won two elections, contested by theopposition, sincebeing installed bythe military in 2005after the death ofhis father.

    GnassingbeEyadema ruled

Togo for 38 yearsand the countryhas often comeunder fire for rightsabuses.

Court Rejects Repressive Press Law Amendments

In March Lagos The Committee to Protect Journalists welcomed the ruling by Togo's ConstitutionalCourt to reject repressive amendments to a media law that granted the state-run media regulatorsweeping powers of censorship.

A panel of judges declared that six articles of Togo's 2009 press law, which were amended onFebruary 19 by the ruling party-controlled National Assembly, were inconsistent with the constitution, according to news reports. The decision effectively nullifies the new measures.

The amendments had granted the High Authority for Broadcasting and Communication (HAAC),Togo's state-run media regulatory body, the power to, among other actions, summarily shut downnews outlets and seize their equipment without a court order. HAAC is composed of nine members, four of whom are directly nominated by Togo's president with the remaining five members nominatedby the national assembly, according to CPJ research.

    5 International Volunteer Testimonial

I have been working in PDH as an international volunteer for about half a month. The situation is not

completely the same as what I have imagined and what I have learned from mass media. Togo, asone of the most undeveloped countries in the world, also has its modernization part, such as 3Gnetwork. However, regular people cannot afford such an expensive service fee.

Many regular people here suffer poverty and disease. A disease named Kwashiorkor, which maypresent an uncommonly huge stomach but with very thin arms and legs, is still pretty common even inthe capital. Many medical experts believe that Kwashiorkor is caused by a serious lack of necessary

protein. Many people here are too poor to afford anything more than the most basic food like corn tofeed their children. Thus, many children here are suffering lack of protein, which might lead to thedisease. What is even worse, several parents whom I have talked with obviously have totally no ideaabout the disease. They thought their children were growing healthily. In addition to financial support,

people here need education about disease and their living situation.

Many people here also suffer from HIV and AIDS. Some people living with AIDS get abandoned byfamilies and friends, and have to suffer the pain of both AIDS andloneliness together. I have visited several people living with AIDS. I donot even know how to describe the situation, just like something that

people living in developed countries can never imagine or at least neverwant to imagine. An HIV-infected mother gets abandoned by the

husband and has to take care of her two HIV-infected children alonewithout even a reliable income. Her home is basically empty with onlytwo broken sofas in the drawing room. I was doing a documentary aswell. So many times, I just feel that I could not take my camera out torecord those sad scenes, even though those sad scenes can give depthto a documentary. They are quite a bunch of different projects in PDH. One project isnamed micro-credit, which is my favorite. PDH provide micro loans to

people. With this money, people can create jobs, such as a motor taxidriver or an apprentice in tailoring. The best part about this project isthat PDH provide helpless people a way to live by themselves instead ofrelying on support from others.

Above all, I have to say that I have been shocked so much after working

here for half a month. Years of time and support from the whole worldwill be needed to improve the situation here. I could not even imaginewhat I have seen and what I have felt here before I came. Thus, Ibelieve it is my responsibility to let people know that there is still a hugearea in the world suffering from almost everything that people can hardlyimagine

We at PDH are aware that many of you who would like to help our cause here in Togo simply

cannot, due to your own financial limits. There are, however, various alternatives to sending

money that can greatly benefit the humanitarian work of PDH.

    Spread the word

Our website features a Download Depot, which stores posters and desktop images. You can

download and/or print these items in order to promote our organization in relevant locations aroundyour town or city eg. cafs, churches and universities.

    Promote PDH

Help us to promote our cause and international profile by telling your friends and family about us. The

more people that know about PDH, the greater our support network - it's that simple. You may also

know somebody who is in a position that can greatly aid us by promoting our cause; a university

lecturer who could throw us up on a slide, a local priest who could speak to his congregation, or even

a travel agent. You could provide them with a copy of this newsletter to distribute.

    Like us on facebook!

Every acknowledgement of our work means a lot to the local volunteers, so consider liking us today!

    Pray

For those of you who are religious, you will know the value of prayer that money simply cannot buy.

Please remember us in your prayers, as everyone's spiritual faith is integral to the work that we carry

    out here.

    Fundraise

You can help PDH raise funds by conducting your own fundraising event. For example, auctioning off

old belongings on Ebay or hosting a dinner with a silent auction.

    10 Reflections on Donations

We often get questions about what people can send to us to help. Over the last couple of years moreand more things that we need such as school books, stationery and condoms are available here to

    buy.

Monetary donations are the most liquid, and thus most effective donation that we can receive. Weavoid postal costs, and often prices are cheaper here so we can gain the maximum value from yourmoney. Another positive outcome from doing it this way is that it helps the local economy here inTogo.

On the other hand if there is something in particular that you would like to send over (e.g. clothes, puzzles, board games) then feel free to do so; we know sometimes it is nice to send over productsthat you have chosen, so we will always be happy to accept any packages we receive. We are alsovery grateful for supplies that volunteers bring with them from their families and friends.

    11 How to Donate

Very often at PDH, we are forced to turn away people that we, quite simply, cannot

help. This is due to the extremely limited nature of our financial and materialresources as we are 100% dependant on donations and volunteers.

We believe that PDH is an excellent choice for those of you who are willing to donate moneyto a small non-government, non-profit aid organization. This is because our administrationcosts are very low and we guarantee that your donation - in its entirety - will provide reliefthat is desperately required by those in need.

To send a cheque direct to Lom (in either , $US or ):

    Payable to:

Centre Social PDHAddress: 02 B.P. 20832 Lom, Togo, West AfricaIf writing a cheque please be aware that it might take several weeks to arrivebecause the post can be quite slow.

For amounts less than50 we recommend either using cheques or contacting us toavoid unnecessary fees charged by the Togolese bank.
