As of this winter, a new generation toboggan will see the light of day from the top of the Jaillet slopes on the “Portes de Mont-Blanc” skiing area. An attraction henceforth developed for the 4 seasons and bringing an original addition to the joys of snow sports.
On the programme: a real surge of adrenaline between banked turns, tunnels and altitude variations. An activity that will delight the whole family. Once you reached the top of the track, the starting signal is given for a crazy descent. Less audacious people can also choose to live the experience more gently by controlling themselves the speed of their sledge.
It will also be possible to take advantage of the toboggan at nightfall, in a magical atmosphere with lighting and sound effects. This generation toboggan is unquestionably the new crazy activity of Megève.

A new chapter begins in the relationship between Henry Cotton and Megève. The famous British professional golfer has given his name to a line of classic and elegant ready-to-wear clothing. Coinciding with Paris, La Baule and Deauville, the brand has just opened an exclusive Henry Cotton boutique right in the heart of Megève, at 34 Quai du Prieuré.
But the story really began in the 1960s. On top of being an exceptional golfer, Sir Henry Cotton is an architect of golf. He was contacted by Baron Edmond de Rothschild, who wanted to create an 18-hole golf course on his Mont-d’Arbois estate. Using his skill and expertise, the golfer designed a reference outline of a course, and today it is the oldest stylised golf course in the Alps.
Today, the elegance and lifestyle that forged Henry Cotton’s identity can be found in the boutique that bears the same name as the Italian brand. The men and women’s lines of British inspiration revisit the classics with ultra-modern cuts. Never out-dated, the designs blend British elegance with noble and highly technical materials to be able to withstand all types of wintry weather on an everyday basis!
Henry Cotton collections will also be available in the brand new boutique at 148 Rue Charles-Feige, associated with the Etiqueta Negra collections.

Megève adds a new contemporary art gallery to its name. Nicolas Laborde who runs the Harmattan Gallery, opens a second venue at 22 Rue Saint-François-de-Sales, named Megève Fine Art. With the wealth of his experience in the world of art, the dealer is able to unearth visual artists whose work is astonishing, just as he presents the work of renowned artists. “I am always seeking out the exceptional, whether by well-known artists or young creators,” he tells us.Nicolas Laborde presents artists such a YaNn Perrier, whose impressive glass globes are enjoying a huge success. “We are very proud to share the magic that an artist has created.” Katia Kuentz’s characters draped in iridescent fabrics, Japanese artist Yuichi Ono’s floral arrangements or Madeleine van der Knoop’s animal sculptures are just a few of the treasures selected by the gallery. “They are hyper-realistic life-size bronze animal sculptures. It is exceptional artwork” enthuses Nicolas Laborde. We can also discover excellent colourist Lise Vurpillot’s wild cats, Annie Cotterot’s animals in Raku ware, or the fruits cast in steel by sculptor Ménoche. Another speciality: nudes. Between the work of Jacques Coquillay, whose monumental sculptures adorn a number of public gardens, Daniel Favre’s women, a skilful combination of angles and curves, or Marion Six’s oil paintings, one just doesn’t know which way to turn…

Nicolas Duquesne, Mégevan at heart for nearly fifty years, thanks to his parents who travelled down from Lille every year for both their winter and summer holidays, chose to lay down his hat close to those that he considered to be his adoptive family following a terrible helicopter accident. From his childhood holidays, he remembers the haymaking and the cows coming down from the high pastures, as well as the happy encounter with Jean-Claude Perinet, with whom he has forged a friendship that goes well beyond learning to ski. Following a career in the fast lane in the world of automobile racing, in 2008 he seized the opportunity of taking over Pelloux Sports, a store founded by François Pelloux, then run by Paul Tironneau for nearly twenty years. This new enterprise that he drives with all his energy as befits his passionate temperament, enables him, bit by bit, to prove to himself that life goes on, and that only Megève could offer him this extraordinary quality of life. And he shares this joy wholly with all of his staff, watching over them like a patriarch over his family, making sure that they want to come back from one season to the next, such as Nadia, who is working at his side for a third successive year. Megève, an exceptional environment in which to live, which reassures Nicolas Duquesne in the choice that he made at a time when the values of welcome and lifestyle were imperative.

Inheritor of the recipe created by her great grandfather Barthélémy, Isabelle Vigliengo continues to write the family history of the “Glaçon de Megève”. Nurtured from the cradle by the sweet aromas of her parents’ cake and sweet shop, in 2010 Isabelle decided to change her professional orientation, take up her grandfather Léon’s dipping spoon, and bring this unique sweet shop that had been passed down through four generations of the Vigliengo family back to life. In the traditional way and with the loving care of a true gourmet, Isabelle prepares, with revere,
one of her delicate little “glaçons” of praline coated in a fine meringue, right down to the making of the little personalised sachet.Radiant and undeniably impassioned, Isabelle jealously guards the secret of this recipe that gives her glaçons a unique tastiness and crispiness. Of the preparation, she discloses only the main ingredients: chocolate, the hazelnuts and almonds that make her praline mixture from which she cuts out the little clusters. Of her skill, we observe the movements repeated one after the other following the correct resting time, and the respect of the products that she has mastered and savours with apparent delight.

«In my winter cooking, I like to use tradition artisan techniques that reveal the best of the different alpine tree species to highlight and dress the winter produce, without completely altering their taste or making them heavy. In the mountains, to smoke products, we use the bark of spruce, silver birch, lime or cherry trees. But the chips and barks from mountain woods are also used to infuse. This infused water can serve as a base for several preparations. As a substitute for a vanilla pod and infused in milk, spruce bark makes a delicious “wood” flavoured ice cream, perfect with a wood-smoked meringue to accompany my flagship dessert: smoked chocolate tart. The aromas of chocolate, milk and wood blend perfectly together to create a winter dessert that is both original and with mountain flavours.” To discover à la Carte all winter at the gastronomic Flocons de Sel*** restaurant!»

“In cuisine, as in patisserie, it is important to have fun. This blend of fruit and vegetables for a dessert seemed to me to make a really interesting allusion to our region and the season. Parsnip and pear, coupled with a selection of different chocolates, create a subtle blend evoking the savours of winter, where the addition of a few well-known spices brings that little twist that makes it really amusing for the taste buds. It is important for me to share this kind of intense taste sensation, that reveals the riches of French gastronomy, with our clients”.

A lovely way to blend polo and a gastronomic ambience! On the field, the players will be at one with their beautiful steeds. Combining impressive gallops, sudden halts and half-turns in the pursuit of the red ball, the matches will be spectacular with the riders ready to do anything!Four teams of three players will take part in the tournament, where the level is 6/8 goals, for 3 days of competition, vying for the famous “Boule de Megève” (Megève Globe), by the sculptor Pierre Margara. The event will also be the occasion to discover a 100% women’s tournament with matches between two teams of three players, as well as a demonstration match of pony polo with children riding their Shetland ponies. Last year snow, sun and a highly charged atmosphere were present. This new edition of the Megève Polo Masters promises to be equally spectacular. The event, open to everyone, will be the only opportunity to watch an International snow polo tournament in France in 2016.

THE COMPANY “MONTE-CARLO SOCIÉTÉ DES BAINS DE MER” UNFOLDS ITS MUSICAL CONCEPT IN THE HEART OF THE SKI RESORT, WITH OUTSTANDING CONCERTS FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JAZZ IN JUAN AND THE MONTE CARLO JAZZ FESTIVAL.
“Jazz is starting to make a come back
to the forefront of the musical scene
and have its own headline acts.
It’s a genre of music that is constantly
evolving. We had placed Jazz in a sort
of chapel reserved to musicologists,
when in fact it is a popular and
universal music style, influenced
by rock, blues, hip-hop and African-
American rhythms”, points out Jean-
René Palacio, the artistic director.
Every summer he gathers the greatest
musicians and young talents to set
the Gould pine grove alight in Juan-
les-Pins and then, in the autumn,
in the prestigious setting of the Garnier
Opera House in Monaco, invites
the audience on a musical journey.
A unique style, a signature, to discover
in Megève too, from the 25th to 28th
March. Among the top of the bill acts :
Melody Gardot, Avishai Cohen, Marcus
Miller and Manu Katché. Running
alongside the concerts held at the
Congress Centre, there will also be
an “off” festival on the Church square
followed by “afters” in the village
nightspots. An “off” that will launch
this first season, with a concert
dedicated to a young audience.

Jazz in Megève simply goes without
saying. Firstly because Megève has
always been a land of artists and
a breeding ground of inspiration for
musicians. But also because here, music
has its own stage.
A backdrop of valleys and mountains,
of light and nature. And we wanted
to build on this evidence with the
collaboration of a highly skilled and
renowned artistic director, Jean-René
Palacio, artistic director of the “Société
des Bains de Mer”, who offered us a
unique programme. Far from the Jazz
stereotype, following in the current
tastes of this trend and by blending
talents to create unique and exceptional
musical encounters.
For us the choice of Jazz was obvious.
The oldest genre of modern music, the
most sophisticated too, authentic and
highly demanding, modern and yet so
ingrained, multicultural and universal.
We invite our clientele to a unique
rendezvous at the summit, an
unprecedented experience between
evenings, afternoons, the “off”
programme and fanfare… It is not simply
a festival, it’s Megève in its entirety that
will take on the colour of Jazz over
a long weekend, to intoxicate the
spectators, taking them on a journey, on
the notes of jazz, beyond the mountains.

FILLE
Sitting opposite each other, amidst the
shelves packed with local products in the
Rue Ambroise-Martin cheese dairy and
delicatessen, they exchange smiles and
glances that speak volumes about their
complicity. When one begins a sentence, the
other finishes with kindness and affection.
Today René Gaiddon has taken a back seat.
It’s nearly ten years since he handed over
the business to his daughter, Catherine. His
eyes shine with pride to see her continue the
family tradition that began at the Planellet
farm at the beginning of the last century.
The family rapidly acquired a reputation for
the delicious farmhouse cheeses that they
sold in a market stall in the centre of Megève.
A great number of Megevans and residents
have been loyal customers for several
generations. Henceforth it is Catherine
and her staff who advise them with their
expertise. For all that, this profession was
not the original destiny that was mapped
out for either Catherine or her father.
Father and daughter alike followed a similar
career path. They had both been immersed
into the ambiance of the family run dairy
and cheese shop during their childhood.
Neither was destined to run the business,
yet they both happily took over the reins
from their parents. “I started by going to
technical school until I was 19”, remembers
René. “I didn’t have the vocation to work
with my father.” After his military service,
he nevertheless decided to follow in the
family tradition. “I learnt everything from my
parents. It was they who showed me how
to work the milk, the Tomme, the Gruyere,
everything,” he tells us. Cheese, butter and
the famous homemade yoghurts have
contributed to the success of the cheese
and dairy store.
From a very young age, Catherine was also
caught up in the family business. “Even
though I had always been immersed in this
environment, I had never really considered
taking up the business”, she confirms.
European law, International business, foreign
languages, the young woman completed
brilliant studies and had even thought about
living abroad. However the difficulty in

finding her first good job opportunity, and
the prospect of her father’s retirement were
to change her destiny. Catherine Gaiddon
came back to Megève.
Quite naturally, she engrossed herself
into the family business and two shops,
very quickly taking on more and more
responsibilities. René is a father with mixed
feelings: he hopes to see the business
continue into a 3rd generation, but he knows
the inherent difficulties of this trade better
than anyone. “I thought it over very carefully,
Catherine remembers. The decision came
90% from the heart.” Just like her father,
and under his watchful eye, she learned the
profession on the spot, in practice.
“He taught me everything he knew, but
had the intelligence to step back and not
to interfere.”
Officially at the head of the business in
2006, Catherine decided to keep only the
Rue Ambroise-Martin shop and to undertake
a small revolution by completely redesigning
the interior and concept. René had faith
in her conviction. “I wanted to advise her,
but I quickly understood that there is a
generation gap”, he smiles. “So I let her
get on with it”. With the support of her
husband Pierre, Catherine has managed to
implement her vision, whilst at the same time
conserving the essence that has forged the
highly regarded reputation of the business
since the 1930s: Quality products, made
by meticulous and passionate producers.

How was the House of Allard born?JEAN-PAUL: My father Armand, suffering from
poliomyelitis, was unable to work in the fields, so he
learnt how to sew with his mother and then joined his
uncle Antoine, who was the village tailor. In 1926 he
created his own workshop on the 2nd floor of our present
day house, which at that time was the “Café de la Route
des Alpes”. He went on to acquire the whole building
and carried out substantial work between 1950 and
1952, entrusting the Megèvan architect Henri-Jacques
Le Même with the fitting of the store.
So behind the A of A. Allard lies armand’s first name?JEAN-PAUL: Yes, and apart from me, all members of
the Allard family have a first name that begins with
A. Funnily enough, and purely by chance, both my
sons, Antoine and Alexandre, have married an Anne
and Anaîs respectively! And the next generation
follow this joyful tradition as Antoine’s children
are called Andrea and Augusta, and Alexandre’s
son, Arthur.
What’s the secret of such a family success story?JEAN-PAUL: Without a doubt, it is our unique ability
in the “sur mesure” sphere of tailoring. But I would
also like to thank the Allard women, my mother
Julia, my wife Sylvie and now Anne, Antoine’s wife,
without whom the story of the Allard brand would
certainly not have been the same. Run a business
and be lucky enough to find fulfilment within the
bosom of one’s family is only possible if our spouses
give us the freedom to do so.
Did taking over the business turn out to be self-evident?JEAN-PAUL: In the 50s my father had
created his own collection “prêt d’avance”
which met the requirements of an era
when the need for a product had to be
quickly satisfied. In 1962, when my father died,
returning to assist my mother and our little, but
fast growing business, was the natural thing to do.
ANTOINE: As a child I always loved to stop by at
the shop on my way home from school, listen to
my parents advising their customers and linger
in the workshop where the retouching was done.
After completing my studies I decided to go
abroad where I was able to learn different aspects
of the fashion trade but, “one never leaves Megève,
we are all attached by elastic, which in time brings
us back to our village”.

In 2004 I took over from my parents with my own
philosophy in mind, which can be embodied in a
few words: “Nothing at A.Allard’s can be found
anywhere else”.
What shared history have Megève & A.Allard written together?JEAN-PAUL: A story that is still being written.
The stories of our family and Megève are bound
forevermore. My father created the A.Allard brand
in, with and for Megève.
ANTOINE: Our history shares the same story.
Our signature established itself and developed in
unison with Megève. In every one of our designs
our wish is to transcribe the image of Megève,
through the quality and creativity that we bring to
our products, each adapting perfectly to our local
lifestyle. Our corduroy, for example, is cut from
bottom to top so that the snow forms little beads
and the cloth is water repellent, and our zipped
turtleneck sweaters will keep out the cold should you
forget to wear a scarf! We are constantly seeking to
evolve in our collections, whether through the choice
of dynamic colours or high quality raw materials
and cloth, to ensure a personalised garment and
service, just like Megève!
It’s difficult not to evoke one of your centre pieces, the “fuseau”!JEAN-PAUL: The “fuseau” binds us to Megève and
one of its most emblematic figures, Emile Allais.
In 1930, Emile turned up at my father’s workshop
with his uncle Hilaire Morand, asking him to find a
solution so that his trousers wouldn’t slow him down
when skiing downhill. After working all night, the
following morning Armand came up with a pair of
trousers with the bottom tucked into the shoe and
held in place under the foot. the “fuseau” was born.
ANTOINE: And from that moment, it has continued
to evolve with the addition of a piece of elastic that
stretched the cloth giving the leg a slim-line look,
and then by adapting to new materials and coming
out in a highly colourful version that undeniably
ranks it as a timeless winter garment.

L’humain d’abord

Human beings first of all
Lovely 180° views of Megève, ”Nailshading”
works, photographs. Olivier Tops’ career
is unveiled at 132 Rue d’Arly, in a venue that
is both a gallery and workshop.
And at the heart of his approach, human
beings. The Tops family ran a photo shop
in the heart of Megève from 1923 until last
year. Following in the family tradition, Olivier
started with traditional photography. He
then travelled the World over developing his
eye: from photojournalism to urban graphic
design. Soon, this tireless globetrotter was
overcome by the “desire to convey the
positive”. He re-worked his snaps and a few
of his father’s too. The Rochebrune cable
car gets back its red colour as if by magic.
“I missed not seeing it anymore”, he smiles.
He also paints his photos in acrylic, adding red
figures, which are often represented walking
in the picture. “Another way to accentuate
human beings.”
At the same time, this artistic all-rounder
invented specialised artistic techniques,
such as QArt (see the following page) and
“Nailshading”, an impressive kinetic concept.
Thanks to a skilful arrangement of thousands
of nails painted in white, then with a lamp
placed above the picture, images and
messages appear as if by magic. “I draw
with shadows”, sums up the artist who has
exhibited all over Europe.

An innovative technique: QArt
At a first glance, you would see a simple

Lincoln or Van Gogh. As you get closer,
the eye distinguishes a multitude of
details. In fact the photo is composed of
QR codes. A minimum of 100, of which at
least 36 are different, but some projects
will include up to 400! When scanned
with a smartphone, a biography, the
best quotations, extracts from speeches
or films and photos appear… Olivier
Tops carries out a phenomenal task to
enrich these works made on aluminium
sandwich panels. He has called his
technique QArt.
“Behind each work, there is a real
written message”, insists Olivier Tops.
“I love the idea of a “Pièce à Tiroirs”
(multi-layered narratives of the same
theme into one story) and the contrast
between a humanist message and the
smartphone, which is a dehumanising
tool”, he explains. These works highlight
the Great Men who have touched,
influenced or amused the artist.
“That enables me to
valorise the acts of
remarkable individuals
and to develop a new
relationship with art too.”

A cross between a design gallery,
showroom and workshop, Formes

to design and decoration created
by Aurélie Chavoz.
“I wanted to create an atypical venue
with my “favourite treasures”, my world”,
she emphasises. This Savoyard by birth
has found the perfect setting in Megève.
Since the end of 2011 she has offered a
blend of art and decoration with French
and European designers as the central
theme. Aurélie loves noble materials such
as wood, wool and leather in designer
creations. “I want to generate a cosy,
yet offbeat ambiance”, explains the lady
who was originally destined for a career
in management.
After seven years of practicing this
profession, she decided to change her
career path and study Interior Design
at the “Ecole Boulle”, school of Interior
architecture. Her decoration, design and
concept blog met with such success
that Aurélie decided to open her own
store in order to market the designers
that she discovers. Formes & Utopie is
also a decoration and design workshop.
Aurélie Chavoz innovates with turnkey
projects, from passive construction to
decoration. She has surrounded herself
with architects and talented craftsmen
and women in order to propose projects
that are innovative, inviting and adapted
to a mountain lifestyle.

SUMMERIS COMING
Un avant-goût d’été au coeur de l’hiver.
A foretaste of summer in the heart of winter.
Whilst having been forced to abandon
during the 1980 Tour de France, Bernard
Hinault is much awaited by the crowd
this 30th August 1980. The Road World
Championships in Sallanches is an event
that the “Blaireau” (“badger”, a nickname
in the peloton) doesn’t want to miss,
especially as up until then, the previous
editions of the World Championships
had hardly been kind to him.
As he rushes onward, the spectators
have gathered in mass by the roadside,
notably along the famous Domancy
hillside with sections of over 9%. Bernard
Hinault is in good shape. He doesn’t
hesitate to toughen up the race in order
to widen the gap with his opponents. But
the Italian, Gianbattista Baronchelli, has
no intention of letting the Frenchman win
the event, especially as Bernard Hinault
has already won the Tour of Italy that
year, as well as the Liège-Bastogne-
Liège in Dantesque snowy conditions.
With only one single lap left, the two men
are still neck and neck, when Bernard
Hainault makes a sudden attack leaving
the Italian way behind. The French cyclist
storms the centre of Sallanches in front
of a jubilant crowd. He once more enters
into the history of cycling. It was 18 years
since Jean Stablinski had won the World
Championships in 1962, and France was
hoping for a new victory. The following
year, wearing the famous rainbow jersey,
Bernard Hinault manages to win the
Paris-Roubaix, and this time does not
let the Tour de France slip away either.

Megève & Saint-Tropez continue to develop strong ties.
Following its tremendous success in
May 2015 the Megève Saint-Tropez
Rally returns next year from the 24th
to 27th May 2016 and Cyril Neveu,
Dakar multiple-winner, is the organiser
once more. The former motorbike
champion, who has been coming to
Megève since he was a young boy, also
has a house near Saint-Tropez. “They
are two villages that I know very well”,
he explains. “Connecting them is a
fantastic route which enables you to
discover the Alps”. He has concocted
a new itinerary, which should be a
surprise the competitors and enable
them to discover sublime panoramas.
And the owners of Classic cars had
better hurry up as they are up against the
enthusiasm and success of the first edition
and there are already a lot of entrants!
The sixty or so participating vintage
cars, each one rare and exceptional,
will set off from Megève on the 25th May
in the direction of Saint-Tropez. “It is
a travelling heritage-on-wheels with a
delightful gathering that represents all
the different makes”, adds the organiser.
And his personal preferences?
“Difficult to say, my three favourites are
the Ferrari Daytona, the Mercedes 300SL
and the C-Type Jaguar”. Along the way,
there are several prestigious stopovers.
The first stage will lead the participants
along the legendary roads of Alpes-
d’Huez. Then on the 26th May, they will
drive to the most beautiful Provencal
villages, notably Saint-Rémy and Les
Baux. Finally on Friday 27th May, the
arrival will take place in Saint-Tropez
on the famous Place des Lices.
