Le grand auteur Jean Giraudoux dans son Discours sur le théâtre dit :« Le spectacle est la seule forme d’éducation morale ou artistique d’une nation. Il est le seul cours du soir valable pour adultes et vieillards, et le seul moyen par lequel le public le plus humble et le moins lettré peut être mis en contact personnel avec les plus hauts conflits, et se créer une religion laïque, une liturgie et ses saints, des sentiments et des passions. »

Ça fait quand même réfléchir. Le théâtre est la seule forme d’éducation morale ou artistique d’une nation. Moi, j’aime bien parler de communication, j’aime dire que le théâtre est le meilleur moyen de communication parce qu’il démontre, il touche, il parle tant au cerveau qu’au cœur, d’où le fait qu’il puisse créer chez les spectateurs des sentiments et des passions.

C’est la 46e année que le TfT communique avec son public et crée des sentiments, des passions.

Un 46e printemps. D’ailleurs, ce n’est pas étonnant qu’on lance toujours notre nouvelle saison au printemps. C’est le renou-veau ; c’est au printemps que les fleurs recommencent (comme le chantait Félix)… un bon moment pour vous annoncer tout ce qu’on vous a préparé pour la prochaine saison : un peu comme si on vous offrait un bouquet de crocus ou de jonquilles.

C’est vrai qu’une programmation c’est comme un bouquet de fleurs. Un florilège d’idées, d’histoires, de façons de s’exprimer, qui devraient nous aider à penser, à aimer, à comprendre qui nous sommes et qui sont nos contemporains ; à vivre en somme !

De Belgique, impossible de passer à côté de Bruno Coppens et ses Singeries vocales : on le retrouve dans un bar et il raconte à son pianiste les péripéties de sa vie. Notre création ados, Les Zinspirés 2.0. Et pour les plus jeunes, L’Atelier de la compagnie Bouge de là. C’est vrai que ça sent le printemps !

Dear FrieNDs,It is with the greatest pleasure that I unveil our 46th season to you. I called it a Bouquet of Flowers with a French Twist.

George Bernard Shaw said: “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”

Yes, the world is a stage; ours is in French and it is the garden where we grow the bouquets we offer you, our patrons.

Since we started presenting over half of our performances with English surtitles, we have created a new community of theatregoers. We love to see people in the house that mirror more and more the cultural mosaic of our great city.

I started this letter with a quote by George Bernard Shaw because we offer you Cher Menteur (Dear Liar) which is based on letters exchanged between the great play-wright and Beatrice Stella Campbell, dubbed the “British Sarah Bernhardt”. The text has been arranged by Jerome Kilty and translated by Jean Cocteau. Add two of the most wonderful actors from Québec, Louise Marleau and Albert Millaire, to this distin-guished list of names, and the combination is a must-see.

There’s also Les Précieuses ridicules (The Precious Young Ladies) by Molière. Such darling buds of May!

And a new play by Luc Moquin, Théâtre français de Toronto’s playwright in resi-dence. Le Fa le do is a suspenseful musical thriller where we look for a voice… a voice that sings Fado from Portugal.

In French there is a song that says “l’Amour est un bouquet de violettes”(“Love is a bouquet of violets”)… I hope that this conveys my passion and love of storytelling to you.

Change the world? It is possible: one play at a time.See you at the theatre!

Dans un style film noir, une intrigue s’installe autour d’un enregistrement sur un ruban magné-tique déterré par Albert, archiviste en fin de carrière à qui l’on a donné la tâche de nettoyer un entrepôt. Sur l’enregistrement, la voix anonyme d’une jeune femme chantant du fado. Envoûté, il se met en quête de celle à qui elle appartient… et se retrouve bien vite plongé dans un chassé-croisé rocambo-lesque, pris entre un groupe occulte et des secrets d’États. C’est donc un polar que nous propose Luc Moquin ; un thriller politique qui mélange suspense, coméDie musicale et western. Embarquez dans cette aventure policière aux airs de fado…

Cette pièce trace les origines de son auteur, Mani Soleymanlou, de sa naissance en Iran, jusqu’à sa résidence actuelle à Montréal, en passant par Paris, Toronto et Ottawa. Une quête de vérité… une réflexion sur l’appartenance et l’identité. Que veut dire « être quelque chose » ? Que veut dire « venir de quelque part » ? Qu’est-ce qui fait de nous ce que nous sommes ?

Jeune artiste ayant grandi à Toronto, il a étudié à l’école secondaire Étienne-Brulé pour éventuel-lement se retrouver à l’École nationale de théâtre à montréal. Quand il était étudiant à Toronto, je l’avais invité à faire partie de notre comité de lecture et de discussions théâtrales. Déjà, il avait le sens du théâtre.

Over the span of four decades, from the Boer Wars to the Second World War, these artists wrote each other letters in which they shared their most intimate feelings on life, theatre, and fame. Sometimes tender, sometimes spiteful, these letters bear witness to the deep friendship connecting these two kindred spirits and the love they both had for their profession and the stage. Adapted for the stage in the 1960’s by American actor and playwright Jerome Kilty, the play Dear liar: a comedy of letters was later translated into French by the famed poet Jean Cocteau, and stars—quite appropriately—two legends of the Québec stage: Louise Marleau and Albert Millaire.

Nous avions accueilli une mise en scène d’Éric de staercke avec Est-ce qu’on ne pourrait pas s’aimer un peu ? du Théâtre Loyal du Trac de Bruxelles — qui nous avait valu le Dora de la meilleure pièce en tournée. accompagné d’un comédien-pianiste, Bruno Coppens, un virtuose du jeu de mots, nous fait adorer la langue française avec ses singeries vocales… tout en nous surprenant avec des tournures comme l’amour que je vous voue nous noue ou bien ses raccourcis comme Quand une fille de 20 ans vous assassine d’une phrase : « Ma mère aime beaucoup ce que vous faites ! », c’est que vous êtes... quinquagénaire !

(horsing around 50)in hiS wiTTY STAnD-UP Show, mes singeries vocales, anything is fair game for comic Bruno Coppens! During his performance, he masterfully juggles words and often bursts into song. Bruno recently turned 50 and he’s never felt more disconnected from the younger generation than he does now. His own daughter, he admits, speaks a different language and communicates using devices and social networks he could not even dream of understanding. It was high time for Bruno Coppens to write a show exploring the pains of growing old and highlighting the importance of conjugating one’s life in the present tense. Director Éric de Staercke offers an uproarious mix of cabaret and stand-up, which has already toured Belgium, France, and Québec, where it was met with open arms and laughter. Musician and actor Pierre Poucet also shares the stage as pianist.

Monologues et chansons nous dépeignent les précieux et les précieuses d’aujourd’hui, qui ne sont pas moins ridicules que les Précieuses du 17e siècle. Ce n’est pas la matière qui manque quand il s’agit de rire de soi… ou des autres.

Quand j’ai choisi de monter les Précieuses, conscient que c’est une courte pièce, je me suis dit : voilà qui va me permettre de m’amuser en ajoutant de courts textes, des chansons, des monologues que j’aime, qui me parlent et qui reflètent la pensée de molière aussi bien que la mienne. Faisons se chevaucher les époques !

In Théâtre français de Toronto’s production, this Molière classic is given a modern and musical setting that reverberates in today’s world, where a book is often judged by its cover.
