rying to introduce youngears to chamber music whentheyre tuned to chart maulingsounds rom Ke$ha, Rihannaand Gaga might seem like alost cause.

But thats not deterringthe Wanton Fawns compos-ers collective who are per-orming a concert titled Pourles enfants, Par les enfantstonight. he show eaturespoems written by local French

students set to music com-posed by Caitlin Smith andRebecca Pellett and played byan all-star chamber ensem-ble comprising soprano Kris-tin Mueller-Heaslip, DougPerry on viola, Alex Sevastianon accordion and cellist Eliza-beth McLellan.

Rebecca approached mewith the idea, Smith tells me.She worked or many yearswith the late ChristopherDedrick, an amazing com-

poser who wrote Suite pourlange Gabriel, which wasinspired by poems written bya child who passed away at ayoung age. Te suite was orig-inally scored or piano andvoice, but Rebecca re-orches-trated it or chamber ensem-ble or this concert.

Smith says Pellett then con-tacted Dominique Denis oAlliance Franaise de orontoand proposed including thework, along with other newpieces written by the collec-

tive, in its concert series. She says when Suite pour

    lange Gabrielwas being com-

posed, she thought it wasunortunate that little Gabrielwould never have the oppor-tunity to hear the beautiulmusic that his words inspired.

We hope that this projectwill educate and inspire thechildren that we are work-ing with, she ad ds. We areso grateul or their charm-ing poetry and weve enjoyedevery part o the process reading the irst drats, working with the children torefne the poems, writing andrehearsing the music and see-ing the childrens reactionsthe irst time they heard thepoetry and music brought to

lie.Smith says that more than80 poems were submitted andthat she and Pellett reviewedall o them, reading themaloud to each other to hearthe musical potential in each.Six o those will be perormedtonight with top notch musi-cians.

Kristin Mueller- Hea-slip is a soprano extraordi-naire and the perect embod-iment o this music, Pellettsays. Alexander Sevastian isa world champion accordion-ist who has won major awardsand competitions around

the globe. He is truly a mas-ter musician, able to make hisinstrument sound like a brassanare, a sombre churchorgan, even the wind and raino a storm!

Doug Perry and Eliza-beth McLellan, who play violaand cello, shine in this smallensemble and their solos willmelt your heart! Pellett adds.I think everyone at the con-cert will see the world through

the eyes o a child romthe innocent joy o Satur-day morning breakast to thewondrous places you travel inyour imagination when youreunder the covers with a goodbook.

Smith says the show willdefnitely appeal to children.

Many o the children whowrote these poems will bethere, and the audience willhave a chance to meet themand to fnd out what its like to

have their original poems setto music, she says. Its also aunique and accessible way toapproach classical chambermusic.

Pellett agrees.I think any child will appre-

ciate both the poetry and themusic, she says. Te show isflled with melodies that wellbe humming all weekendlong. Caitlin and I both wantto inspire and engage thekids in the process o makingmusic, to show them wheretheir weekly piano lessons orchoir rehearsals might oneday lead.
